Season Picks and Other Thoughts

With pitchers and catcher reporting in just five days, what could be better than Carson’s Fourth Annual MLB Predictions! These are the first to be posted online. But first, more pressing news.

Curt Schilling Apparently Curt Schilling has partially torn his rotator cuff and will miss anywhere from four months to the entire season. We were so close to getting through this offseason unscathed. But fear not. The Red Sox have five other projected starters signed in Beckett, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, Lester, and Buchholz (I’ll figure out how to spell that eventually. I could spell Mientkiewicz after a couple days but Clay’s name just baffles me). The only problem is that management wants to start Clay in Pawtucket, in order to keep an eye on his pitch count. That leaves us with only four starters, and few options. We could either call Clay up early and hope for the best, have Julian Tavarez fill the 5th starter role until Clay is ready, get in on the Joe Blanton sweepstakes, which would likely cost us a fair amount, or sign a free agent. No one too sexy is available right now, the top guys on the market are probably David Wells and Bartolo Colon. Wells is 44, and Colon just sucks. Not really sure what happened to him. Blanton would be the best fit, but I wouldn’t give up either Lester or Ellsbury to get him, which we would probably have to with the Reds offering a package including Homer Bailey. Most likely we’ll get to see another half season of Julie, which actually wasn’t so bad last year, if you think about it. He had a solid ERA for a number 5 starter, I’m not sure why everyone’s so down on him.
